An eye for creativity.
I saw this photo on my facebook wall, shared by a friend.
Needless to say, this photo was taken by George Steinmetz from the air. And if you haven't figured it out by now, the "camels" are actually shadows of their casters, which are the white figures on the ground. It was taken at sunset, hence explaining the shadows.
Moral of the photo: Always be on the lookout for different angles to take your photo from. You never know when you might achieve a stunning shot!

Nat Geo: Halfway through college, George Steinmetz bought a camera and took off on a "big wander." Hitchhiking from London to Zaire, he was captivated by the remote regions he passed through. He vowed to go back, to capture these strange, barren landscapes in a way that had never been done before. "It became my long-term dream—to find a way to photograph deserted places from above." Years later, the motorized paraglider became Steinmetz’s solution. The Sahara, Antarctica, and South America’s Altiplano are among the places he has since documented. "You see unique things from the air," he says. "Paintings, camel trails, ceremonial locations, little patterns in the early-morning shadows. In Niger we discovered pre-Islamic graves. You must find what is unique in each area, and figure out how to convey it visually," he says. "Driving across the Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia is like captaining a small boat on a vast white sea. When shot from above, a photo incorporating a vehicle will give the viewer a sense of scale."
While wind, sand, and ice shape land in different ways, all desolate places share a surreal, otherworldly quality. "You are stepping into other worlds," says Steinmetz, "so it’s best to seek advice from locals who know the lay of the land."Needless to say, this photo was taken by George Steinmetz from the air. The Negative Effect
Heys.. I came across this short preview of this unknown film on the net that follows this group of Malaysian Lomographers and explores the foundation of their love for Lomography and perhaps in a broader sense, film photography or just photography. I know that some of you are very into this lomo thingy and stuff.. though I'm not exactly a huge fan about such a concept..
But if anything that makes me like this short trailer, is that even in the pursuit of technical excellence, it reminds us that we need to keep in our minds that we need to keep photography relevant to us and more importantly, fun.

Canon Lion City Cup 2011
It has been a while ever since the previous post, and since I happen to have the time, I have decided to breathe some life back into this blog. :)
Alright, I know the Lion City Cup has came to an end roughly a week ago with CR Flamengo winning the title, but I still want to share the action captured during the first two matches of the Cup.
This is the premiering match, featuring Newcastle United Under-15 versus Singapore Under-15 (in blue). Singapore won with a score of 4-3, putting in the winning goal within the last minute of extra time.
CR Flamengo Under-15 (in red) managed to scrape a 1-0 win against Everton United Under-15. Although CR Flamengo was undeniably more aggressive, Everton stood their ground and fended off the majority of the attacks.
It was a great honour and an awesome experience shooting for the Cup, since it was of a scale bigger than most school events. I also have some tips for anyone who might have the chance to cover such sports events:
1) Always remember to bring a tripod, or a monopod if you can get it, especially if you know that you'll be using big lenses like 70-200mm f2.8L. Otherwise towards the end, your arms will be so tired you won't even feel like shooting.
2) Bring a stool (or something to sit on comfortably), else you will find yourself struggling with an aching back after 3 hours of sitting there unsupported.
There you go, this blog seems much livelier already. Keep it going people! I shall go get ready to book in now. =S

Look at what I've found!!
Since no one is in the mood to write a new post and dunno what happen to our dear children also...
Anyways.. I was clearing up my room, throwing away stuff to make some space for the new behemoth that was coming into my room today.. and I stumbled onto this.. My first meeting notes. Ahh so nostalgic.. Enjoy..
Ohh.. and I forgot to mention, on the back was the printout for the very first version of the club logo.. it was in khaki green..hehe^^

Minor updates from the Alumni
Hihi^^
First and foremost, congratulations to the new photog exco on making it so far..you might think it has been a rough ride.. but you have only gotten to the start line. Many trials and tribulations await you and I, on behalf of the Alumni wish you all the best in fulfilling your goals and make all of us proud.^^
Also! Congratulation to the outgoing exco on making it to the finishing line.. I know it has been a tough year for you guys.. many things have happened but I'm sure you all have emerged stronger as a result of your experiences. I hope you all have found your exco experience fulfilling. I think being in exco isn't so much about what you have achieved, but more of how you have discovered yourself as a person. How you work and how others work; your own weaknesses and other's weaknesses and how to cover up for each other and improving synergy. These lessons you have learnt will come in useful in the future when you start climbing the ranks of the corporate ladder and will give you an advantage when compared to others who are still stumbling over the mistakes you have made in the past. As for your photography, I hope you all will continue to shoot and improve your skills. There is a whole world out there waiting to be shot.^^ To Shruthi: You seem to be rather unhappy with me and I don't know why. Do let me know because there is no point in letting things hang midair :)
To all 09/10 members, you are all invited to join the Alumni, however no one is forcing you to join though^^. However, if you felt that through your seniors, photography has made a difference in your life, then perhaps you should join the Alumni and make the same change in your junior's life^^. In case you all didn't already know, all official correspondence from the Alumni exco will be via the blog. So we hope you will continue visiting the blog daily and keep the page counts high and make dear Quentin one happy webmaster^^.
Talking about Alumni, in case you still don't know, the alumni will be holding an exhibition during College day and the theme this year will be "Editing Required". Entry submission will open in June and is open to ALL members and Alumni and editing is required...:P E-lesson will be up as soon as our dear VP is done with his exams and we look forward to your outstanding entries^^.
I know some of you believe Lomography's method is in itself an sacred art and should not be fouled by the vile fingerprints known as digital editing and want to prove your point. I would sincerely like support you in your honorable quest to expound your ideals and extend my resources to you by giving out free expired 35mm a.k.a 135 format slide film and offering free 120/135 format film scanning. Contact me if you are interested and expired slide film is on a while stock last basis. 1 roll per person so no need for cat fights in front of my front door:P..^^. Ohh, in any case, free film scanning will be available all year round to all members and Alumni for non-commercial purposes. Lomo camera not included.
To those of you looking to borrow a lomo camera, you can try asking Mr T via PPC. Though I wonder if he will loan out his precious action sampler..hehe.. or you can try asking Ms Koh to lend you her Seagull.. it has a foggy communistic lens; a prerequsite for lomography:P.
Some of you might be curious as to why am I offering this service for free... I believe that if you seriously want to improve your photography skills, film photography is an option that can further improve your skills as it will ground, grind and mince you in your photography fundamentals and literally force you to think before you shoot. All the better photographers in our club are testaments to my theory; Eunice, Junsen, Xing Quan, Chin Chye and perhaps a few more that I have missed out... However, I must admit that film photography is becoming more and more expensive as the years goes by.. With popularity of digital photography, film has scaled down, and with the lack of economies of scales, prices have been rising steadily. However, this still doesn't change the fact that film photography can improve your skills greatly. I'll do a simple breakdown of the costs for you: Negative film costs $3-$6 depending on the brand and type, slide film costs anywhere from $8-$15. Developement will set you back another $6 and no point just looking at that tiny frame of yours. To get your image from film to screen, you need to scan the film and that costs easily $15 if you go to a lab to do it. All together, it will cost you anywhere between $24-$36 per roll and each roll has only 36 frames. That's almost $1 per shot! So by eliminating the scanning cost, you can save up to 62.5% of the costs!! So with this, I hope more of you will be more adventurous and dare to enter the realm of film photography.
Anyways, that is all I have to say for now..^^

The Best in the Business

In this utopia, the only camera that exists is the perfect one.
Today, the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and the Nikon D3S are closest to such impossible perfection. In the holy realm of photography, these highly-coveted machines are the top-of-the-line tools for professionals who demand the best and tolerate no compromise.
These may be two of the best cameras in the trade, but they are also impossible in another way. With each costing more than $7,000, they are out of reach to the average amateur, exclusive to commercial photographers, Bruneian sultans, Middle-Eastern sheiks or anyone with annoyingly deep pockets.

Since digital cameras were invented, cameras have become smaller, smarter, and more convenient to use and carry around.
With the advance of technology, one does not need to go through the hassle of buying a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) just for quality photos. Compact and semi-pro cameras can perform surprisingly well nowadays.
1. Make a shot list

4. Get into the correct posture

GREY is Not a Colour
couple of weeks ago, PPC told me...
PPC: i bought a 7D for the club. it's a grey set la. $2200.
me: wa cheap!
PPC: ya, grey set ma...
then i turned to my husband...
me: wa, roy bought a 7D for the club...
husband: wa...
me: but grey colour one... he says cheaper...
husband: ah yo, why grey??
me: ya lor... grey colour body so weird... >.<
then today i saw PPC...
me: so u going to shoot the new staff with the 7D?
PPC: ya la
me: $2200 ah so good price...
PPC: ya... grey set ma
me: but so ugly... grey colour...
PPC: what grey colour?
me: what what?
PPC: AH YA!!! *chuckle!!!!* grey set means it's imported set so no Singapore warranty la! not GREY COLOUR!!! -_____-||| *ROFL*
me: oh? i was wondering how come got grey colour 7D one....
