300 words' never enough...
"In my journey as the Vice-President of MJC Photography, I have developed myself as a better leader. While being engulfed in the crossfire between academic expectations and photography demands, I have managed to acquire better time-management skills and know my priorities. There was once when I was the overall-in-charge for several projects and assigned the chief-photographer for various major events, the overwhelming stress from my teachers, peers, family and even myself led to me being on the verge of breaking down and giving up. However, my burning passion for photography and my fundamental reasons of joining the executive committee are often the agents that drive me through these tough times, together with the support from the teachers and eight lovely excos. Doubling the role as a project manager, I have to constantly look for opportunities to enrich the lives of my fellow photographers. Although Mr Royston Cheng regards the welfare of his photographers as his priority, he often pressurizes the excos to challenge the process and pushes me beyond my limits. It is through all these exhibitions, competitions and explorations that I have come to realize the importance of teamwork and understand the meaning of “the process of learning matters more than the results” and “practice makes perfect”. I fervently believe that in order to inspire my members to take better photos, I have to undoubtedly refine my skills as a photographer to show the others what they can do as well. I am confident that I have successfully achieved this as I see my juniors replicating my photos after each photo-sharing session. Although my experience as a meridian leader wasn’t a smooth-riding one, I feel that it is these little imperfections that constitute my perfect leadership journey in Meridian.
I have never regretted joining Meridian Junior College Photography Club. "
This is my meridian photography experience, what's yours? (:
Hi everbody!!!(in shruthi's voice)... yes, this is my first post ever since i joined photog. ;DD oh and Mr Cheng ask me to post a self-reflection of my Meridian Leader's Portfolio, so here it is...posted by kenny, ex-vice-president.

The Lo-Fi something something
as someone who hates writing essays and has a poor command of English, you would probably spot some grammatical errors, poor sentence structure by now. but on the internet, where pirate talk and l33t speak are recognized languages on facebook, i am therefore the most qualified person to introduce this event to yer all.
let me start by introducing my friend bold
he will be asking the questions
and i will answer them
so lets start
... what on the name of the milky way is this event?
The lo-fi photography project (le lo-fi projet photographique) is the name of the 2010 alumni exhibition
... whats lo-fi photography
style of photography generally using poor equipment, such as toy cameras or pinhole cameras, for stylistic effect (examples)
... i own a big bulky camera that
hence people at Adobe™ came out with PhotoShop™ which allows you to colour tone your photos to achieve the same effects.
... ah i see
of course you can!
... how many submissions will be printed?
about hundred
... but i am not alumni leh.. can i take part?
no you cant. a hefty participation fee of €1,532,789.26 (after taxes) will be imposed on all non-alumni members who want to take part
...
why do you always start a question with three dots?
i thought i was the one asking the questions?
times have changed. you have been overthrown
and of course every alumni centered post ends with an alumni logo
... in 3D!!! ( 3D glasses required )

Stepping Down
My very first heart attack ......
Of course, being a QM was not that smooth especially during peak periods, when I receive loads of requests - apologies for not being able to fulfill some of them. I also suffered many "mild heart attacks."
I survived.
Kenny! 7 UP.! (You really look like Fido Dido) TOOT TOOT! I love making fun of you because you don't get pissed. haha.. You have always been helpful....thank you. And you have totally changed from the serious Kenny to one who jokes more.
Soon Hao & Justin! You two are always "gaying" around! LOL. Thank you both for always offering to help me and lifting my spirit by being your high selves. You two are always doing things that make people laugh real hard. Oh! I have already eaten half that gigantic tube of sweets. Totally diabetic now!
Chin Yee! My best bus khaki! Going home became much less boring along that long stretch of walkway. (We live in the same area...along the same road.) At your gate, we will say "See you tomorrow at the clubroom...AGAIN!" Then both of us would roll our eyes, laughing. You have always been so accommodating. I remember when you, Gil and I went shopping ........we saw socks which came in a set of 3. Gil and I looked at you and you went "fineeee." LOL.
Errfeeee! I will miss your laughter..... you laugh - with our eyes closed, we will know it's you. Thank you for being tolerant of my requests and helping to fulfill them. Remember the flower poster?? HA HA.
Gillian! I will miss the times when we sit at the QM corner, gossiping while we clean the lenses. I recall the many times we would have missed alighting from the bus because we talked non-stop during the journeys. Without Chin Yee, we would have travelled to the other end of the island. Thank you for always being there when I need a listening ear.
Ivan! Thank you for being patient with me when I am unable to fulfill all your requests for equipment. ~ if only we had more lenses~ * hint hint* to Mr Cheng.
Cheng Boon! Thank you for sharing your knowlege on photography.... for assisting.... for being with the EXCO till late at night when we need your help. We greatly appreciate it.
In short, I will miss all of you....*sob sob*.....the past year has been a fulfilling and memorable one.
~God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.~

On a happy occassion like this ^-^
(Sorry I've yet to find out your name, but I will this coming Saturday, which is dear Sam Sim's birthday :D ).
As the date approaches to my birthday & eventually stops at this very day, I keep thinking of one thing again and again.
Last year this day was a Wednesday & all the JC2s had their Chemistry SPA (Skill A I think).
I received many, many well wishes, both for my birthday and the SPA.
Didn't feel that birthday is a significant event in life, didn't feel that way most of the times.
The day went on as per normal with "Happy Birthday!" here and there.
I still remember the last lecture was Physics lecture, so it was just Vanessa (you all will know her this Saturday too ^-^) and I heading towards the clubroom together.
You feel happy when people remember you birthday, but when they did more than just that, it really melts your heart.
While heading from LT4 (or rather, the toilet beside the LTs) to the class room, and at the walkway/bridge/whatever you call that, I heard this..
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.."
At the study benches outside the hall, the people who meant a lot to me...
The Alumni, current members, Mr Cheng & Ms Koh.
The present, the cards, the cake & everything.
The truth is, I was embarrassed for a nanosecond because I don't really like elaborate affairs like this & the photographers were pressing the shutter buttons non-stop as I walked towards them.
But it disappeared almost as instantly as it appeared because I was really, really very touched.
This is, the Photography Club for me.
We remember each other, we appreciate one another.
Of course, this is just one of the beauty among all the shit that we have to go through together.
But what we see, is the rose and not its thorns.
We accept one another in every way that we can, and we give one another the support that they need no matter what it is about.
We fought, but we reconciled, and it brings us even closer.
I guess all the 09/10 EXCO understands this already, while the 10/11 EXCO is just about to start their journey.
Whenever there's a need, you can always seek help from the Alumni (EXCO members go there post-retirement haha!).
We will all help you guys/girls to have the best memories in your life, something you'll never forget.
So much so that, after your JC days end, you'll just look back and say "I miss school".
But I miss them even more, including those not in the above photograph.
See you all on Saturday then :)
Till then we meet :)

What is photography to you?
Well, although time consuming, some use stop motion photography to express a series of thoughts, and I find this medium the most interesting. Anyway, I found this on youtube while searching for some new ideas, enjoy-

Sighzzz... Post missing...
Perfection
Today, I went to the Camera Hospital to fixed an old Seagull TLR which belongs to my mum. It was recently dug out from my storeroom to the delight of my mother.
When I first step into the workshop, I was greeted by this man sitting behind this table full of camera parts. He totally look like he is creating a Frankenstein monster. Taking out my TLR, I explain that I need to get it fixed.
The first question after listening what needs to be done to my poor TLR, he asked a very simple question: How much does the camera meant to you ?
Such a simple question, but it really set me thinking really hard on that spot. The TLR to me was just a TLR to allow me to try out medium format cameras, however I believe it meant a lot to my mum. It was the first and only camera she owned then and it was the camera she enjoyed photography on. To me, that meant a lot.
I went on to talk to Steven, the 'Doctor' of the hospital, he told me the reason he like to work with cameras is that they are never perfect and everyday is a discovery. To him, perfection was the tip of the iceberg where there is nothing else to achieve, nothing left for him to discover. He loved his cameras they are, even though I think he has like thousands of them.
His words led me to reflect what Photography is about for me. Is it the thrill of using a kick-ass camera ? Is it the attention I got from chicks when I was shooting ? Or maybe its the satisfaction I got from raining down on Juniors with the uber-geeky-ness (I don't know if this word even exist, JS help me double check) of Photography?
I realized not, although I got to admit its a little bit of all those. Photography is a form of expression for me, sad to say the only way that I could really express myself. I wasn't born an artist, neither am I now. I could not draw for shit(although I am trying to learn now) and have to practice for art lessons. I am not good with words both in written and in verbal.( Well it is evident from this post which my friends have to proof read for me for grammar mistakes). Photography was left the only few options that I had of to express myself. A perception of what I see & feel. It is that moment in time which I can freeze it in that medium in my hands which I can go back to. That is what Photography was about for me.
Often what we see and feel is never perfect, it is this imperfections in our little life that led us to constant self-discovery. Not a perfect weather to shoot, you never what you would have missed out. Have something unexpected that came into your scene when you took your shot and you decide to delete it, look closer ;)
All this little imperfection in life are the ones that people will remember. If everything was perfect, life will be as boring as PANTONE 7543M.(Go check photoshop if you do not know what it is). This post will then tie in well with the theme of our up coming Alumni Exhibition- "Editing Required". You do not need to aim for perfection cos editing is required :) Shoot as you feel like it, show like you meant it. Express yourself :)
I leave you now to think what are the little things in life that matters to you. Meanwhile, I will carry on to enjoy my cup of coffee while listening to great music while surfing the web while editing photos while drawing T-shirt designs for my camp while writing this post. Arhh Abba is up next !
